US Airways has embarked on a major fleet-replacement programme. The company, which took delivery of 12 Airbus jets last year, needed to source funds in a market where export credit is unavailable and the cost of bank debt is particularly high.
The company looked to diversify its funding sources in 2011. Discussions about how to fund the year's deliveries began at the 13th annual European Airfinance conference in Dublin in January, says Tom Weir, vice-president treasurer, US Airways. "We were in acquisition mode, with hundreds of millions of dollars of equipment to finance."
