The resurgence in popularity of the turboprop is fuelling speculation that manufacturers will enter the 90-seat market.

ATR forecasts a demand for 3,100 turboprops over the next 20 years. This market, though dwarfed by Boeing’s estimate for 33,500 larger jets, is worth about $75 billion and will require willing investors.
According to ATR, its 2011 results indicate that the regional aircraft market has undergone a structural change.
Filippo Bagnato, chief executive officer, ATR, says that turboprops account for 77% of the backlog in the 50-seat to 90-seat category – a situation that nobody would have predicted during the boom years for 50-seat regional jet orders.
According to ATR, jets accounted for only 15% of aircraft orders in the category in 2011, a figure that is all the more remarkable given that ATR accounted for about 95% of all turboprop orders, with Bombardier’s Q400 experiencing a very lean year.
