A new capital markets player

As Jefferies builds its aviation expertise, it will focus on trading, capital markets deals and strategic advising.

During the financial crisis in 2009 there were not many new capital market issuances in the sector. However, given the volatility in the market, trades continued with some investors looking for distressed paper.

"There was a lot going on within the financing area as well as the secondary trading of underlying securities and loans," says Robert Harteveldt, global head, leveraged finance, Jefferies. "We viewed aviation as a great opportunity for Jefferies no differently than we had previously identified other areas in which to expand during the downturn."

James Palen, managing director of leveraged finance, joined Jefferies in 2009 along with Nolan Heske and Evan Wallach from Guggenheim Securities to focus on trading and sales and transport-related securities. During the last two years, the company has closed seven deals and recruited Goran Avdicevic, formerly with JP Morgan, as a managing director in investment banking for Jefferies.
