IATA calls for "misguided" ETS plans to be dropped

The aviation industry has responded strongly to recent announcements from the EU about the proposed emissions trading scheme (ETS), which is due to come into effect from January 1 2012.
Connie Hedegaard, EU Climate Action commissioner, said in a statement on September 26 2011 that airlines would receive â¬20 billion ($27.3 billion) worth of free carbon permits during the first ten years of the ETS.
"With these potential revenues, airlines could invest in modernising their fleets, improving fuel efficiency and using non-fossil aviation fuel," says Hedegaard. But organisations representing airlines disagree.
