Asian LCCs come of age

Large forward orders drive Asian low cost carriers into alliances with their legacy counterparts.

Last week it was announced that Malaysian carriers Air Asia and Malaysian Airlines would buy minority stakes in each other.

The proposed deal is noteworthy because the two carriers are direct competitors, but it is one of a number of alliances that have sprung up in recent months.

In June, Lion Air said that it planned to take a 49% stake in Malaysia's Berjaya Air. The proposed joint venture is expected to be completed in the second half of 2011.

Last month, Air Asia announced a joint-venture with All Nippon Airways to start a low-cost carrier in Japan. The airline also formed an alliance with Qantas' low cost carrier, Jetstar, last year.

Just today, Qantas announced another joint venture with Japan Airlines and Mitsubishi, Jetstar Japan. Read more here.
