The UK government is planning a shake-up of the airport regulatory system that will see a new licensing regime introduced and a requirement for airports to focus on the passenger experience and environmental fallout.
Under proposals put forward today by transport secretary Geoff Hoon, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) will have a duty to promote the interests of passengers above those of airlines and ensure that airports meet their environmental obligations.
The new regime means larger airports – those with five million passengers or more – will need to have a licence, while 42 smaller airports will be deregulated.
