Many people will want to forget 2008, but there were a number of great transactions as Airfinance Journal’s Deal of the Year Awards show.

Lehman Brothers bankers packing their belongings into boxes. Stunned futures traders shocked by the collapse of markets. Shops boarded up. Rioting in Europe. Many of the pictures published in 2008 were desperate and scary ones.
But aircraft still get built in bad markets and 2008 saw terrific deal structuring and execution.
Closing any deal was a challenge. The fact that the airfinance market financed aircraft worth over $86 billion was an amazing achievement when many markets were closed.
While the cyclical nature of aviation means that everyone in the market has to suffer tough years it also means that we are used to a adversity. Airfinance Journal’s 2008 Deal of the Year Awards recognise deals that were innovative; tapped new sources of finance or found new participants; and, as always, reward borrower ambition and lender commitment.
