The year ahead for aviation finance

If forecasting the future is always hard, now it feels impossible. At the end of 2007 nobody could predict how much the world's financial markets would change. We have seen some of the mightiest institutions falter and blue chips fail. It has been a truly awful, dramatic, exciting year.

The financial crisis is not over, so it is particularly foolish to attempt to forecast what will happen in 2009. However, fortune favours the brave, and here are some predictions for how the aviation finance market will look in 2009.

On a general note, we will see the role of finance directors and treasury teams continue to grow in importance at airlines. In tough times, finance can make a big difference to an airline's performance or even its survival. Airlines that tapped markets...
