Somewhere in the depths of a vast hanger complex in
Seattle, 5000 people wait with excitement and anticipation. While lasers flash and dry ice swirls, secreted away in a darkened corner and hidden beneath a canopy is what everyone has come to see: the brand new 777-200LR.
As the aircraft is unveiled, inflatable globes fall from the ceiling and inspiring 'world music' that combines African with Latin salsa rhythms and didgeridoos plays in the background. Just as the audience are thinking it can't get any better, out comes 150 school children singing.
There is hardly a dry eye in the house by the time the speeches start: programme manager, Lars Andersen; representatives of launch airline Pakistan International Airlines and the star of the local baseball team, the Seattle Mariners.
What a way to see in the longest-range aircraft ever built, certainly worth of its title: Going the distance.
