A stretch too far: 747-800

Boeing has finally launched the 747-800. Its predecessor was a revolutionary aircraft, but there are doubts that this stretch will be able to compete with the A380.

Aircraft manufacturers have a habit of overstating the importance of their aircraft, but the 747 deserves a special mention. It is 34 years since the first 747 entered service with PanAm and the aircraft changed transatlantic travel forever. Boeing is hoping that the 747-800 will add to the aircraft's success.

Boeing officially launched the 747-800 programme in November. Cargolux has ordered 10 747-800 Freighters and Nippon Cargo Airlines has ordered eight.
