Business travellers may moan about the time they have to spend in airports, but more investors and banks are keen to finance them.

Like airlines, many airports have suffered during the past four years. Airports rely on airlines paying them landing charges and on airline passengers shopping while waiting for flights.

But while it has been tough, the downturn has been the perfect test of the modern airport business model. Commercial airport companies have demonstrated that airports can still benefit cities and regions without being state owned – and governments and municipalities are increasingly realizing that airports are often the most valuable assets that they can own.

In 10 years' time, 2005 may be seen as the year when airport finance really matured. But while it was clearly a great year, 2006 is already looking very promising. Ferrovial's bid for BAA has put the UK company in play. Only a handful...
