India's aviation market has great potential not only for the country's domestic airlines but also for the industry worldwide. Will Roberts reports.

Zigzagging through the chaotic roads of New Delhi in a three-wheeled auto rickshaw is an exhilarating way of viewing the city. But the congested and hectic mass of vehicles, cows and people, with a soundtrack of beeping and a succession of near-collisions makes it clear that road traffic management is in need of some repair.
In this aspect the road sector mirrors that of the country's aviation sector. Aviation in India has been booming since 2003, with deregulation affording new opportunities for private airlines. Low-cost carriers have been at the forefront of the growth phenomenon, eating into the traditional transport modes of road and rail, but such rapid growth has placed a heavy strain on the underlying airport and air traffic management infrastructure. Nevertheless, the consensus at the Indian Airfinance conference was unanimous – the market has huge potential and holds great promise for investors.
