[Sukhoi Superjet 100]
Final assembly of the Sukhoi Superjet 100, formerly known as the Russian Regional Jet (RRJ), is about to start. This is no mean achievement for the first
Russian aircraft to be designed from the outset to western certification standards, something that recognizes the importance of the international market.
The aircraft is due to roll out in September for a first flight by the end of the year. The requirements of the Russian market have had a strong influence on the size and range of the Superjet. Sukhoi says that there is a domestic demand for an aircraft with just fewer than 100 seats and a range of more than 1,620 nautical miles (3,000 kilometres).
However, the international market has always been part of the strategy. The company says it sees a market for 800 aircraft, of which 250 to 300 will go to airlines in Russia.
