Ghana launches new flag carrier
20 December 2004
Ghana International Airlines plans to launch operations in the second quarter of next year after finally signing service agreements with the Ghanaian government. GIA will take over as the national carrier from Ghana Airways, which the government says will be wound down. The airline is now negotiating for a fleet of eight to 10 widebody and narrowbody aircraft and will serve destinations in Europe, North America and West Africa from Accra. SkyWest founder Ralph Atkin will serve as managing director. The Ghanaian government decided to wind down Ghana Airways in the face of rising debts and losses and an ageing aircraft fleet, and will service the former airline's debt. It will also take a minority share in GIA. The rest of the airline will be owned by a US consortium, GIA-USA, which includes Atkin's World Transport Group consultancy and Sentry Investments of Utah.
